Birding
Tanzania is a very important country from an ornithological perspective. There are 1,113 recorded species with 800 resident species and about 300 regular migrants. This count includes 56 species that have conservation status with 23 endemic species and another 43 species that are only found in one or two other countries. Northern Tanzania is especially diverse in bird species and the Serengeti National Park has 500 recorded species, including 34 species of raptors. The area of northern Serengeti and Loliondo can yield 250-350 bird species year round. It is not only mammals that have migratory seasons, but birds do as well. There are two primary bird migrations, during the green season and during the dry season. European migrants can be added to your checklists in the months between October and April, making Buffalo Luxury Camp a year-round destination.
The diverse geography of northern Serengeti and Loliondo provides a variety of habitat, attracting an unusual diversity of species. There is low-land forest, acacia bush and scrubland, savannah , riverine and various rock formations at various altitudes. The high kopjes near Lobo and the various rock formations in Loliondo are ideal nesting sites for raptors. Northern Serengeti is the best location to view the Verreauxs Eagle, often called the Black Eagle. The huge Crowned Eagle is the largest of the raptors, with the Martial and Verreauxs Eagles next in size.
We welcome all mammal and birdwatchers to this paradise. Birding may occur from your safari vehicle or during a guided bush walk.
