The Wildlife
Buffalo Luxury Camp can be enjoyed throughout the year. We recommend two days at the beginning of a safari in the green season and at least three days at the end of your safari during the dry season. The dry season is a peak time for the herds to move through Loliondo as well as all areas of the northern Serengeti. From Buffalo Camp you can enjoy game drives in northern Loliondo or also drive to the Mara River. Clients who are able to witness this spectacle are in for a memorable experience as hundreds of thousands of wildebeest and zebra cross the river while crocodiles lie in wait. Game drives in the Serengeti allow you to also explore the areas of Kogatende, Bologonja and the Lobo Valley, some of the most scenic vistas in all of the Serengeti. There are large herds of elephants, eland, cape buffalo, impala and giraffe all throughout these areas and northern Loliondo, as well as prides of lions, hyena, leopard and cheetah. Clients have counted as many as 26 giraffe browsing together near Buffalo Luxury Camp.
During the green season, the large herds of wildebeest and zebra are not in the area, but there are resident herds that remain and are an important food source for lions, leopards, hyena and cheetah. There is a pride of 26 lions near Buffalo Camp and this is also the territory for a male leopard. Birding is especially exciting in this area, which offers a diversity of habitats attracting many types of birdlife.
Of special interest are the two packs of wild dogs that have been collared and tracked in northern Loliondo, near the area of Ololosokwan. Wild dogs are highly endangered and spotting dogs can be a once in a lifetime experience. Trackers from Buffalo Camp carefully follow the movements of the packs and are in communication with the Frankfurt Zoological Society, who monitors the research for the wild dogs. Additionally, the government of Tanzania is engaging in the largest translocation of black rhino in all of Africa. A total of 32 individuals are being released into the northern Serengeti, a prime habitat for the browers. It is our hope that black rhino might also be seen near Buffalo Camp, with the potential to see the Big Five in this area.
